It’s been a year since I left him. A year since I walked out of that door and never looked back. It hasn’t been easy, but I’ve managed to pick up the pieces and rebuild my life. If you’re reading this, then it means you’re at the point where I was a year ago. You’re ready to leave, but you’re not sure how. You’re scared, and you have every right to be. But I want you to know that it is possible to get out, and to start over. Here’s how I did it…

1. Get rid of anything that reminds you of him.

This was probably the hardest part for me. Every time I saw something that reminded me of him, it was like a knife through my heart. But I knew that if I wanted to move on, I had to get rid of anything that would remind me of him and our time together. So, I sold or donated all of his clothes, got rid of any gifts he had given me, and deleted all of the photos we had together. It hurt at first, but it was so liberating to finally be rid of his presence in my life.

2. Change your routine.

If you’re anything like me, then your relationship was probably the center of your world. And that’s why it’s so important to change your routine after you leave. I started going to different coffee shops, took up new hobbies, and made an effort to spend more time with my friends and family. At first Everything from the way you woke up in the morning to what you did on your lunch break was dictated by him. So, breaking those patterns and creating new ones was essential in helping me move on.

3. Give yourself time to grieve.

Even though I was the one who ended things, I still went through a period of mourning. And that’s normal. Allow yourself to feel sad, angry, and scared. Cry if you need to. But don’t dwell on the past. Remember, you’re moving on for a reason. And each day will get a little bit easier, I promise.
